Sonny T Weaver soprano saxophone
Dr Ario Buckling organ
The names of the two musicians on this recording are pseudonyms for personal reasons. However, this should not deflect us from appreciating the bravery and integrity of these improvised musical explorations. This is two people playing unsanctified music in an empty church. Yet it's intimate and at times reverential too.
It's also playful and evocative – at one moment I was picturing cats play-fighting and then birds swooping and swirling in the air. There's vitality and excitement, there's thoughtfulness and uncertainty, there's skillful interweaving and there's parallel co-existence. These are interactive and empathetic conversations that explore the mysteries of sound, space and colour and I for one was completely enthralled by the world they created.
The territories the musicians move around in are both known and unknown: the known territories are the instruments' histories and their sounds, heard against the background of the church ambience; the unknown territory is that moment when play begins and the magic starts to fizz.
