caroline mckenzie Recent excavation of 2 live sets from 1999 by Brian Lavelle and myself - I could remember very little about these and was very pleasantly surprised. 05/06/1999 is a guitar/bass/delay piece, 20/11/1999 is field recordings, handheld sampler, controlled feedback and other sounds I can't quite identify (forgive my memory). Tape as time capsule. Favorite track: Glasgow 20/11/1999.

"Glasgow 1999 features two sets by Inversion, Brian Lavelle's project with Caroline McKenzie.
The November recording is a "time-bending" electronic set, with a modular synth hissing and wriggling over lapping water. As the filters do their work, the synth becomes a bass throb, harried by gnawing static and submerged voices.
June's "solarflaring" set taps into the hidden reverse of English folk music, with hurdy-gurdy like loops skipping over a distorted guitar chug. Over time, the loops dissipate into feedback while McKenzie picks out a descending figure. A trip.
21 years later, McKenzie is on a hot streak with the modular synth odysseys of Beth Gripps, while Lavelle continues to deliver masterful collages of field recordings and electronics.
Glasgow 1999 is a timely reminder of where these outstanding yet overlooked artists came from."

This tribute really manages to capture Coltrane's spirit. The improvisations on Coltrane's compositions are all excellent and so is the opener track which is inspired by Coltrane's work but not one of his compositions. Absolutely worth listening! Florian Janyszek
