about

These tracks were all recorded on acoustic guitar whilst staying in Llanfechain, Powys during April 2021; so, just after the English-Welsh border had reopened.
The first 6 tracks were recorded in the old servant’s quarters I stayed in. The last track was recorded in the adjacent countryside.
Listening back now, a year later, I am pleased with the performances.
The playing draws on a variety of languages but, I think, successfully combines them into a personal style that is becoming increasingly unified.
Phrasing, rhythms, and harmonies from the influences of 20th Century composition, improvisation, blues, jazz, thrash metal, and electronics - the latter might be a surprise, given the acoustic instrument, but in that regard I hear repetitions and layerings in some of these recordings that derive from my work with modular synthesis (an electronic piece ‘Powys and Essex Countryside’ remains currently unreleased).

What is the point of this playing? I believe that new means and languages of expression remain to be discovered and constructed.
A certain feeling is what this music aims at, just not the usual off the peg feelings and emotions. In particular, no cheap redemption or conclusions. I don’t want to manipulate the listener.
Except that, different means of communication inevitably alter what is communicated; but that will have to be worked out between us.
Just before the time of this writing, my father died.
I found out, as an adolescent, that he was not my biological father; nevertheless, he was always my real father.
I gave him a CD I made with Eddie Prévost and John Edwards (‘Darkened, yet shone’)

He said that he was not on the right drugs to appreciate it.
‘Llanfechain’ is dedicated to Derek Moore 1951-2022.
