This trio was born from the sessions that were played in Oxford during the early 1990s. My view now would be that a larger group may have been more appropriate for the China Pig concert; the trio needed to engage the audience for the full evening.
From the outset there were two audience members who enjoyed a private but loud discussion in the front row.
I recall being irritated at first, but I needed to concentrate on the music so became largely oblivious to their presence. If they weren't enjoying the concert they'd surely leave during the interval.
They stayed to the end.
After we'd finished playing the two conversationalists approach me. "Great concert... we're in a band... we're number 6 in the charts".
I would have been a little unapproachable after playing and I remember thinking "What charts?", but didn't ask.
But I did ask the name of their band: "The Prodigy".
Unfortunately, this meant nothing to me, and I left with the impression that they were some local Hackney band with talent that had lead them to enjoy local radio coverage resulting in the statistic of being 6th in some chart.
At work the following day I asked a few friends about The Prodigy.
It became evident that they were genuinely famous and on their ascent to stardom...
