about

Mark Browne soprano saxophone
Pat Thomas electronics

"Lol Coxhill introduced me to Pat Thomas.
I had been to see their duo at an arts centre in Windsor.
Pat rushed off after the gig to catch a train back to Oxford and I drove Lol back to London.
At Lol's we drank coffee and looked through photo albums until 2am. Lol showed me the original photographs which were used and abused for the covers of "Instant Replay" and "Fleas in Custard".
Lol suggested, as I lived in Aylesbury, that I make contact with Pat - he'd put in a good word for me beforehand. By the time I got around to making contact, I had moved to Wiltshire and so was not so close to Pat.
The first four pieces presented here are from 22 June 1992, our first session, recorded at Pat's house. I like this group of pieces a lot.
I am playing my old Meister soprano saxophone. Pat is superb and as inventive as always.
At the time I didn't mix instruments when playing and concentrated on one at a time. I now wish I had used some alto saxophone as well.
After we finished playing we completed the afternoon by listening to outtakes of the Vic Reeves album (Pat had obtained a cassette copy from Steve Beresford who, along with Evan Parker, plays on some of the album).
The meeting with Pat resulted in some regular playing opportunities in Oxford with Pat, Nick Couldry, Matt Lewis, Alex Ward and Dr Switch (Ben Hervey) of the XIII Ghosts.
The Red Rose Festival performance was not planned.
Pat was scheduled to play as a duo with the trumpet player Jon Corbett.
Jon hadn't arrived, so Pat asked me to step in. Jon arrived at the end of our set, just as the applause subsided..." [Mark Browne]
