Six months before, in the Peer Hat, we don't have time to speak properly before we play as I'm organising the gig and there's various things going on, but then we sit down to play. Phil hasn't played live for three years because... well, oh, you know, of course... and then, it just works. We know our language; the half a phrase left as a question, the cæsura, the broken horizontal line, the flurry, 0.254 seconds of a Captain Beefheart tune, John Stevens Click Piece falling sideways...

It's now October 2023; I've set up two stereo mics in the living room of our small terraced house pointing down at Phil's drumset and my trusty SM57 is pointed straight at the centre of my guitar amp. Talk and play, talk and play, talk and play.
Music fills the room; we soon have the five tracks you hear here. Some honesty. It works, as ever. Quiet sounds, quiet sounds and then, wow, Marksist snare crack in a 4m x 4m room with wood floor is something to hear. I go and pick my kids up from school and I make stir fry for dinner and we all sit down to eat. As Phil is leaving I'm amused to discover my neighbour has been in all afternoon, not at work as usual. He gallantly claims he didn't hear anything. [David Birchall]
