Nils and I started playing together in the mid nineties. For a few years we rehearsed together at the community music school in Bergen where Nils was a drum teacher. We would come in early in the morning and play for a couple of hours before he started work.
We rarely talked much about what we should or shouldn't play, but just played.
We named the duo 'der brief'.

Later on, Jørgen Larsson would join us; he was studying piano at the Grieg Academy at the time, and in the beginning he would set up different free improvisation exercises for us. Later Jørgen would join in playing synth and vocal improvisation. We recorded one 'der brief' album with this now trio called 'VOLUM' for Lasse Marhaug's Jazzassin Records in 1998.
We made some more recordings without Larsson but with Jørgen Træen [electronics].
Since then me and Nils have been playing, off and on, as 'Public Enema'.
We also kept up morning rehearsals and through the years we have invited lots of other musicians to join us. I found that free improvising is a great way to start the day. - John Hegre

Jazzkammer played a festival in Mexico City (with Nils) and shared the bill with SunnO))); we went to see the pyramids one day and SunnO))) brought their robes to do a photo shoot.
Gisèle was with Stephen then and when they went to change into their robes for the photos on the other pyramid I grabbed the opportunity and got Gisèle to take a band photo of Public Enema, making sure to get SunnO))) awkwardly changing into robes in 35 degrees C in the background. I thought it would make a good band photo - John Hegre
