three previously unreleased improvisations taken from the sessions which produced the duo CD "Grind the Air" [Gokuonsya ‎– GO-07] 2004.

MOQU [もQ] (1957-2005)

At the age of 23, Moqu (Shigehisa Tanaka) started playing the tenor saxophone.
His early musical interest was in the blues and R&B so he joined a local blues band in Nagoya in the early 1980s.
In the late 1980s he was inspired by free improvisers such as Otomo Yoshihide and John Zorn.
He experienced musicians playing noise music and free jazz in Nagoya in the early 1990s and began playing with local free improvisers changing his main instrument from tenor saxophone to alto.
He began promoting and collaborating in many workshops, concerts and events for performers in Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka, and Hiroshima.
In 2000 Moqu formed a saxophone duo with Homei Yanagawa. Moqu had previously been intersted in solo saxophone performance but wanted to explore the communicative dialogue of working with another alto saxophonist.
Their first live performance was so exciting that both were convinced of the creative possibilities of their duo.
However, in 2004, Moqu was diagnosed with stomach cancer and had an operation. In November of 2004 Moqu and Yanagawa released the CD “Grind the Air”; the CD was Moqu’s first and last album.
In January 2005 his cancer reappeared and he died, aged forty-seven, on March 5th 2005.
