Markus and I met via Soundcloud; I had uploaded a guitar improvisation which Markus found and played over with contrabass recorder. He sent the recording to me, I loved it, and we decided to do more.
Long-distance remote collaboration works fine for me; I live in small village in a rural area of Eastern Finland and I mostly work alone.
I simulate a 'real' live situation by playing without listening to Markus' track beforehand.
Still, I prefer 'live' music and playing; remote working lacks the interplay between players, the small gestures, sudden changes, the real-time listening to each other. But, remote working also has its benefits: timeless, no set schedules, you have the chance of a second take (although I always use the first).
We have released three albums together with this remote method, sending audio files to each other and playing along, recording the result, and mixing the audio files together either in Germany or Finland.
Last Summer, in Düsseldorf, we met in person for the first time but, unfortunately, didn't have the opportunity to play together.
